Who I Am

I am a physician with an MD from Bogotá, Colombia, complemented by a doctorate in Community Health Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

My passion for research began at Maharishi International University in Iowa, where I conducted pioneering studies on the effects of meditation on cardiovascular health in African American communities, research supported by NIH funding.

Experience and Leadership

Throughout my career in Chicago, I have held strategic positions including:

  • Director of the Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center at the prestigious Jane Addams College of Social Work
  • Co-author and lead trainer of the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)
  • Co-director of recruitment, retention, and community engagement programs at the UIC Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences

Current Focus

Currently, as Faculty and Researcher at the UIC School of Public Health, I lead a CDC-funded project focused on:

  • Promoting diabetes self-management education
  • Developing innovative models for health service integration
  • Improving quality of life for minority communities with type 2 diabetes in Cook County

My professional commitment centers on reducing health disparities through culturally adapted interventions and training programs for community health workers serving Hispanic and African American populations.

I'm delighted to welcome you to my practice!
